The Faculty Adaptive Leadership: Leading from the Inside Out

Apr 18 at 11:30 AM - Apr 18 at 1:00 PM AEST

When leading genuine change, first we must change ourselves.

Traditionally, we have thought of leaders as being the ‘boss’ in charge who knows the answers and tells others what to do. But the challenges we face today are complex and messy. We need a different approach. We will explore how and when we need to look inward to transform ourselves, before we are able to lead changes in others.

Many managers and team leaders are grappling with various challenges, including an overwhelming workload that leads to heightened stress levels. Additionally, there's a growing realisation of the need for team members to assume greater responsibility for overall team performance. The evolving landscape of work also demands more creative and innovative responses to complex challenges, such as supply chain changes, sustainability requirements, and fostering a positive team culture.

In this experiential session, participants will embark on a journey to explore critical questions. They will delve into inquiries such as: Who is a leader? How do individuals perceive themselves as leaders? What factors have influenced our historical perspectives on leadership? Participants will also examine the shifting work environment and the necessity for a more co-creative approach. The session prompts reflection on the specific challenges faced in engaging others to enhance their awareness and responsibility for transformative actions. Lastly, participants will explore the essential aspect of personal change before effectively engaging others in the change process.

This presentation is supported by Josie’s book: Big Little Shifts: a practitioner’s guide to complexity for organisational change and adaptation. This is the third presentation that Dr Josie McLean has offered on behalf of the Faculty, with her previous presentations receiving an average member rating of 9/10.
