Who senses a general paranoia across procurement

Who senses a general paranoia across procurement professionals and procurement organisations? Why this need to constantly seek affirmations of procurements value? My humble view is the procurement is desperately trying to become a profession of its own via certification or focused education. The problem is the best procurement people I know are generalist at heart from all fields. Does procurement have an identity crisis?
