What is more important, the right attitude or the right skill set?

This will depend slightly on the situation and length of engagement, however I would have to say attitude every time; new skills can be taught, attitude can't (or it's extremely difficult to do so).

"Excellence is not a skill, its an attitude"

If we're talking about striving for excellence, then i'd definitely say attitude (and a splash of APTITUDE to learn new skills)

Just to mix things up...I'd go 60/40 in favour of skill.
Some skills can't be taught and attitudes can change!!!

First, it depends on the role. It is not the same for a director, an administrative scanning papers or a project manager... but in general I would bet for the mix (as Darren), but even would move more to the limit with 80/20 in favor for skills for executive people.

Only attitude and willingness are not enough. With a nice attitude and no clue in a competitive environment, after short time the rest of the team will be a bad mood and negative attitude.

Attitude... People with good attitudes but poor skill develop their skills eagerly, people with good skills but bad attitudes won't change. The good attitude is contagious and will help the culture of the team develop, the bad attitude will be like a cancer on the team.

They are a symbiotic relationship, with the correct skills you will have the attitude to succeed. With a progressive attitude you will be able to gain the best skill set to achieve your objectives.

I would agree with James. Skills can be taught, but you need the right attitude to be able to be taught skills. Without the right attitude, things can become very tricky for all involved!
