What are the key considerations when sourcing IT Hardware?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they think are the key areas that you have to consider when sourcing IT hardware such as PC Screens etc? From my experience, depending upon the specification or whether you are sticking with a particular brand it can vastly affect your ability to negotiate effectively. Thoughts?
