Security checks on suppliers during supplier selection

when selecting suppliers to your network, suppliers may have to go through a vendor due diligence and security checks. This is relatively easy to be done on large providers how ever iits not the same for smaller suppliers . What should be the evaluation criteria in terms of security checks for small scale suppliers or individuals who provide services? credit checks can be a possible guideline for north American providers, what about the smaller scale suppliers from the rest of the world? is there a certification body such as SEDEX to evaluate or do security checks on smaller suppliers globally?
