Private Sector Practices in the Public Sector??

Working in the public sector I am keen to continually review our procurement offer and try and adopt more private sector practices in terms of being more commercially driven to maximize success, rather than traditional bog standard open or restricted tender procedures. I'm interested if anybody has tried something slightly different that has achieved real success through public procurement?
