How do you manage your inventory in an Engineer-to-order company?

For an assignment, i've been working on how to deal with inventory in an Engineer-to-order company. These companies are project based and therefore ideally, there shouldn't have to be stocked items. In this case there are several stocked items. My question is whether you have experience in this field and/or if you know how to manage this type of inventory.
