CIPS - is it better to do the exam based route or the coursework (apprenticeship-type) route?

Would an employer favour someone who has sat the exams over someone who has done the coursework based (apprenticeship-type) qualification or vice versa? Or is it the case that it doesn't matter as long as they have the qualification?
